The Dorchester Triple Decker

The Dorchester Triple Decker is a poetic from we created to celebrate an iconic aspect of the physical and community architectural makeup of Dorchester, as embodied by the iconic "triple decker" homes of our neighborhood.

So, what is the Dorchester Triple Decker?

  • Three tercets (a tercet is a three-line stanza or block of text).
  • One word or phrase that repeats/echoes somewhere in each tercet.
  • Three writers together in one poem.

Instructions: Start by choosing a floor to write the first tercet. Then pass the poem to a friend or neighbor. Each writer should complete one floor/tercet, remembering to repeat/echo the same word or phrase.

Share your completed triple decker online with the hashtag #3deckerpoem, and tag us on Twitter at @dotwrite and on Instagram at @writeonthedot

You can also start your #3deckerpoem on social media: write one tercet—then tag two friends/neighbors to help you complete it.

You can download a PDF of the original "triple decker" form here.

Write on the DOT Literary Journal

Every year (or so), we publish an anthology of writing by Dorchester writers and students from UMass Boston to showcase the creative work taking place in our community.

To publish this journal in print, we rely on the generous support of community sponsors as well as the UMass Boston MFA Program in Creative Writing – we are forever grateful for their support in promoting writing and the arts in our community.

While we are still working on digitizing all the previous volumes, you can download a few of the past anthologies below, and you can pick up physical copies of Volume IV at home.stead in Field's Corner.
